Intimidating anonymous letters have been sent to Hindu temples around the country, warning them that “idolatry is worse than carnage”.
“Islam teaches that God does not share His divine attributes with anyone”, the letters continue, among several passages quoted from the Quran, Islam’s holy book.
The letters began arriving last week, and police were immediately contacted, Multicultural New Zealand national office head of operations Gurtej Singh said.
In another incident of temple vandalism in Jammu and Kashmir, a man desecrated idols at the gate of Dashmukhi Mahakali temple in Subash Nagar on Thursday. Shortly after the incident, police arrested a local from the area who allegedly vandalised the idol in an inebriated condition.

A spate of attacks on Hindu temples in the US state of Texas and Australia’s Melbourne has triggered concerns among the Indian community living abroad, even as authorities probe for any possible hate crime. The first incident took place at Shri Omkarnath Temple in the Brazos Valley, Texas, on January 11, KBTX-TV reported on Friday.
According to reports, the temple was raided by burglars who stole some of the valuables from the premises, leaving the Indian community in a state of shock.
